June News

Language Arts


Students will be reading and writing haiku, diamante, and cinquain.  A haiku is a three line poem which is usually about nature. The first and third lines have 5 syllables and the second  line has 7 syllables.  Students will put to test their knowledge of syllables which was emphasized in their Words Their Way work this past year.



                                        



The diamante is a 7 line poem which does not rhyme. The first and last lines have one word. The second and sixth line has 2 words. The third and fifth lines have three words. The fourth line has four words.  Lines l, 4, and 7 are nouns. Lines 2 and 6 use adjectives and lines 3 and 5 have verbs. Here is an example of this:

                        Noun

As you can see, this poem forms a diamond, hence, the name, diamante.


                        



A cinquain has 5 lines and tells a small story.  The first line has two syllables, the second line has 4 syllables, and the third line has 6.  The fourth line has 8 syllables and the last line has two syllables. Here is an example:

                                           

Math


In math students are completing Unit 8 in Investigations on multi-digit addition and subtraction. Presently students are working on subtraction problems with money. These involve comparison, removal and finding a missing part.  Students will use different strategies to figure out making change.  They may add up from a number or count backwards.  Others may change one number to make the problem easier to solve.  For example: 

If a students knows $5.00 - $2.00 = $3.00, then they can figure out $5.00 - $1.97 = $3.03 because the students will realize $2.00 is three cents more than $1.97.



 

Science


In science, students have studied the parts of the bee.  Then they made a bee stick.  With this bee stick students will pollinate their Brassica plants.  Since the students' plants are at the flowering stage, they will experience how a bee transfers pollen from one flower to another flower.
